Adventures in Student Representation

Click on the sub headings on the left to see more detail and plenty of photos of my time in the student movement.

Napier Students Association (NSA) - as Sabbatical Officer for Campaigns & Representation, Chair of the SRC, and student member of University Court at Napier University of Edinburgh.

UK National - on the Exec of the National Postgraduate Committee (NPC) and at the Councils, Conferences and eventually the National Executive Committee of the National Union of Students (NUS).

International - with the NPC and ESIB, the National Unions of Students in Europe.

Of course, it all started with winning sabbatical election, in Spring 2000. Here are the photos!

Campaign Director, Fraser Sim, calls to arrange even more posters.

Campaign Associate, Jenny whatshername, recruited to my staff
of trusty volunteers during the campaign, canvasses a voter.

Personal appearances by the candidate are essential and
I spoke to an estimated 2000 students during the campaign.

The NSA 'civil servants' start the election count. It took a while to
count all the ballot papers but eventually I was declared duly elected!

Aberdeen associate Alan Martin fixes us up a courtesy meeting with
the University of Aberdeen sabbaticals whilst I, er, take a photo.

This had been the scene in 1999, shaking the hand of Cat MacGregor,
with the incumbant President, Hubert Grealish, looking on, after she defeated me
in that sabbatical election. I had won a solid 35% of the vote, though,
and didn't look quite as drunk as her in the student newspaper photo!
